Some of our favourite Croydon watering-holes: The Green Dragon, The Dog and Bull, The Royal Standard, The Claret Freehouse, The Cricketers Shirley Road, The Victoria Cross and The Lion in Pawsons Road. We also go further afield to such venerable venues as The Garland, Redhill, The Wenlock Arms and The Harp, but the main thrust of our pinting occurs within easy tram, train and bus travel from Croydon and district. Live music is often a consideration in our choice of venue.
We occasionally organise days out to visit pubs and breweries slightly further away. Recently members visited Harveys Brewery. Another trip took in Dark Star pubs in Brighton and Lindfield. Real ale of exceptional quality, served in a proper pub, is the bottom line.
Membership is open to members of the S.P.B.W., otherwise is strictly by invitation only, and is prohibited to: sexists, racists, bigots, evangelical tories or the converse, beer-bores, career criminals, curmudgeons, talentless gaberlunzies, religious extremists or zealots of any kidney, fence-sitters, calumnious misanthropes, practitioners of contumely, typhoid carriers, übergits, any who suffer from apocrine bromhidrosis, and practising psychopaths. This list is not exhaustive.
There are no branch officers; decisions about branch activities are taken quasi-collectively. Suggestions for venues and trips are discussed by all those interested, and sometimes acted upon, depending how much strong beer has been consumed, and whether or not such arrangements can be remembered the following day.
